To the Overview
Additionally, in rural regions there is high-speed broadband provision (up to 30 Mbit/s) for over 750,000 households. And to meet the rising need for mobile Internet access, in March 2009 we were Europe’s first network operator to introduce HSPA+ and we equipped 1,000 transmitting stations across Austria with the fastest mobile transmission technology currently available commercially. This makes up to 21 Mbit/s (in the future even 42 Mbit/s) possible in radio communication. From the transmitting stations the data traffic is transported in the high-capacity fiber optics network. For AirToFiber is more than the sum of its parts and an important element in the Giganetwork of A1.
Giganetwork
"The whole is more than the sum of its parts." This is also true for the networks that are being equipped for the ever increasing amounts of data. It is not only that an increasing number of people are using the Internet, the services' need for bandwidth is growing steadily. At the beginning of mobile TV one minute of video was just about half an MB. One minute of an HD video makes about 60 MB. The wider the data highway is, the faster the driving. Which means that the need is there. For this reason we started the project Giganetwork in 2009. In our fiber cities Klagenfurt, Villach and in Vienna’s 15th and 19th districts there are test markets for fiber optics connections with up to 100 Mbit/s.Additionally, in rural regions there is high-speed broadband provision (up to 30 Mbit/s) for over 750,000 households.
