The prevalence of smartphones and netbooks leads to more and more data traffic. Today data transmission in our mobile network is 250 times higher than it was five years ago. LTE enables mobile broadband users to surf the net 10 times faster than with HSPA+, and allows them to enjoy top-quality YouTube videos or HD films from aonTV on their mobile phones.

Live in Vienna and St. Pölten
We have already launched LTE in some areas in Vienna – Floridsdorf and Leopoldstadt – as well as in Lower Austria (St. Pölten) for a pilot project. The base stations are connected to the A1 fibre optics network via AirToFiber. Radio technology used in the LTE project comes from the Chinese network telecom solutions provider HUAWEI. It is the global number one in next generation mobile communication.

LTE Innovation Leader
From the beginning A1 has been the first to deploy this new technology: in May 2008 we presented LTE for the first time in a live demo in cooperation with Nokia Siemens Networks. In May 2010 we achieved transmission rates of 100 Mbit/s at the A1 laboratory with an LTE-enabled USB flash drive, which is ready to go into mass production. Before the current pilot phase in Vienna and Lower Austria was launched, we had conducted a test series.
