Research & Development

According to Friedrich Schiller "The strong man is strongest when alone". We believe that the opposite is true; our motto is "success is a team sport". This is why we are cooperating intensively with different institutions from the business world, science and research - together we can achieve more.  We pool our knowledge and ideas to generate new technologies and applications with added value for users.

University of Vienna

A1 and the the University of Vienna have established a chair at the Department for Future Communication. This endowed chair will focus on the question of how high-performance communication systems have to be organised in order to improve future applications. A1 is cooperating with the Department of Statistics and Decision Support Systems as well, focused on the development of new tools for optimising topologies. To this end the University of Vienna is developing special algorithms and methods for hybrid access networks, focusing on cost optimisation, existing assets and topographic factors.

Vienna University of Technology

A1 is a partner of the working group “Mobile Communication” at the Department for Communications and Radio-Frequency Engineering and the Department for Broadband Communication. This research cooperation scheme covers projects on the simulation, planning and optimisation of mobile networks, development of innovative antenna technologies and continuous development of new mobile broadband technologies for even better data transmission. In the field of fixed net communication, migration to the next generation network is one of the core issues for A1. In cooperation with TU Vienna they are analysing this package-based architecture concerning the use of traffic engineering.

Christian Doppler Laboratory for Radio Technology

The new research lab “Radio Technologies for Sustainable Mobility” was established in 2009 in cooperation with the Christian Doppler Research Association, renowned international business partners and the Vienna University of Technology. The laboratory focuses on issues like connectivity, availability, reliability of wireless communication networks especially in the field of intelligent transport systems and telematics applications for transport.

Vienna University of Economics and Business

A1 provides technical equipment and A1 services for 16 students from the Vienna University of Economics and Business. They will evaluate how they can use these innovative A1 products in their everyday lives and how these tools can facilitate their tasks as students as well as their private lives.

Telecommunications Research Center Vienna (FTW)

The Telecommunications Research Center Vienna was established as an independent, R&D-cooperative institution for telecommunication. A1 employees work together with FTW researchers at the research centre. They work on issues like wireline access technologies, security in next generation networks, service and applications platforms, multimedia services and intelligent transport systems.

Eurescom

Eurescom (European Institute for Research and Strategic Studies in Telecommunications) research projects bring together major network operators who are working together on current problems like converged services delivery and new services like e-health, new network architectures like "Future Internet" or new application areas like M2M. These joint studies include feasibility studies, SWOT analyses, use cases and recommendations concerning standardisation from the operator’s viewpoint.

USECON, CURE & University of Salzburg

Usability, the ease of use of complex systems, is the key to success for any product. Therefore, the "User Experience Innovation Lab" was established in cooperation with A1, USECON, CURE and the ICT&S Center of the University of Salzburg. The new laboratory focuses on customer-oriented product development.
